事實上，布蘭妮過去曾多次陷入法律爭議。2007 年她曾在洛杉磯被指控發生碰撞停放車輛後離開現場，面臨多項指控，最終因賠償車主損失而撤銷部分案件，另一起「未持有加州駕照駕駛」的指控也被判無罪。當年事件加上外界對她疑似濫用酒精與物質的擔憂，一度讓她失去與前夫所生兩名兒子的監護權。
布蘭妮代表方則發出聲明表示「這是一起不幸且完全不可原諒的錯誤事件。布蘭妮將採取正確的步驟並遵守法律，希望這能成為她生命中渴望已久、迫切需要的改變的第一步。」
